Stan Cohens Ideas

Stanley Cohens study was primarily about the Mods and Rockers of the 60's and how they were viewed and treated in the public eye. The main criticism was that they were seen as a threat to law and order largely due to the way mass media represented them, which is what Cohen calls the 'control culture'. Largley this refers to the media sensationalising an event and then calling for a punishment to be set to persecute the offenders.
A moral panic occurs when condition, episode, person or people emerge to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests. 'Moral entrepreneurs' are those who start the moral panic when they feel a threat to prevailing social or cultural values, and people who supposedlu threaten the social order are known as 'folk devils'.
A deviant is someone who goes against social order, and to amplify this the mass media make this out to sound worse than it is, which is deviance amplification.
